In more personal news, I turned a year older this August. I thought about the things I am grateful for. In addition to my family and friends, and health and happiness, I am grateful for you - the reader and supporter. Yes, you. In contrast to the usual birthday convention, I don’t expect a present from you. Instead, I would like to give you a present! You can win one of ten free copies of Project Animal Farm on Goodreads here. The book giveaway ends at midnight tomorrow (Thursday), so make sure to enter by then! Two months after Project Animal Farm was released in Chinese, the Asian edition finally arrived at my house. I can’t understand a word but the text and layout are beautiful! The launch of the book in Taiwan and Hong Kong is at an opportune time, as China, the world’s largest consumer of meat today, has started focusing on food policy. Here is a moving, brightly visual three-minute video titled Less Meat, Less Heat, that encourages people in China to cut their meat consumption in half to benefit their health and the health of the planet. The key points:
  • “If our diets don’t change, our planet will change.”
  • Meat consumption contributes to obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease—conditions that are responsible for 85% of deaths in China.
  • “Replacing meat with plants, for 1 meal or a lifetime, is the best thing you can do to help our planet.”
James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger made a two-minute video praising China’s stand in improving diet. “We have to see the world as one world that we’re all participants in,” says Cameron. “If people tell you to eat more meat to be strong,” says Schwarzenegger, “don’t buy it.” I enjoyed being interviewed recently by an Australian blogger, Gemma Davis. Cleverly titled Down the Farming Rabbit Hole, the conversation can be found here. This is Gemma’s opinion of Project Animal Farm: The book “absolutely blew my socks off. Not only was it one of the most beautifully prosed [books] I have read, but Sonia’s thorough journey of discovery went deeper than I could imagine. The result is a story that weaves jaw-dropping facts with a captivating personal story…I really encourage you to read Project Animal Farm and travel with Sonia through her pages.” [post_title] => August 2016 Update: Events, Book Giveaway, and China [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => august-2016-update-events-book-giveaway-and-china [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2017-11-25 00:11:32 [post_modified_gmt] => 2017-11-25 05:11:32 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://www.soniafaruqi.com/?p=1732 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw )
